Convenience retailers must adapt to succeed in a future that’s all about the customerShelving Solutions at the National Convenience Show 2013, NEC Birmingham. The Shelving Solutions stand proved to be a ‘must see’ for visitors to the National Convenience Show 2013, where the increased number of exhibitors and upbeat atmosphere was evidence of a buoyant convenience retail market.
Shelving Solutions’ stand management team was kept busy across all three days by visitors – representing all areas of the market from independent convenience store owners to some of the UK’s premier retailers - interested in learning more about Shelving Solutions’ cost-effective, British-made, modular shelving and counter systems.
What drove delegates to the Shelving Solutions stand? According to Stuart Yates, visitors were drawn to the stand by Shelving Solutions’ reputation for providing customers with customised and cost-effective solutions to their retail business challenges that combine innovation with practicality.
“Shelving Solutions never loses sight of the fact that every customer is different,” he explained. “We work very closely with customers at every stage from initial idea through development of a concept and design – complete with mock-up sample– before delivering a truly unique solution.”
“We’re renowned for our creativity approach but it helps that we have the industry expertise and the product range needed to turn a great idea into a successful reality.”
Stuart Yates continued: “We have the customer success stories to prove our approach works. In the convenience sector, we’re helping market leaders, such as The Co-Op and One Stop, create a new generation of customer-focused stores offering a far more attractive local shopping experience.”
When Price is an issue, buying British is Best
For the majority of visitors to the Shelving Solutions Stand, pricing, and the related issue of the long- -term cost-effectiveness of any investment in shelving and display systems, were priority concerns.
“Whenever cost concerns were raised, we recommended buying a solution built from British-made products as the most budget-conscious option. In the short term, buying British is a fool proof-way of avoiding exchange rate fluctuations and import costs. Then, over the lifetime of the shelving or display system, the exceptional build quality and reliability of products from companies like HMY Radford, ensures maximum, long-term return in investment.”

Shelving Solutions featured a selection of products on the stand, all of which are designed to offer attributes such as mobility, flexibility, modularity and adaptability. The various mobile sales and merchandising units proved to be most popular exhibits.
Visitors were impressed with the flexibility of the units, and the variety of ways in which they could be customised to offer customers a greater selection of products – and more reasons to spend.
“Visitors saw the value of using our Mobile Sales and Merchandising units as a more professional way of displaying products such as OTC medicines and personal care items. There was also significant interest in using the mobile units to provide a continually refreshed selection of “impulse-buy” products such as wine, gifts and cosmetics.” said Stuart Yates.
Shelving Solutions’ products are designed to help retailers create convenience stores that offer a much wider choice of high-quality products, notably fresh foods, plus regularly updated seasonal and special offers, and access to services – such as the Post Office, utility and mobile phone payment services and parcel collection - that make life just that little bit easier for customers.
Products on the stand included:
• The multi-use Modular Sales Counter is being used with great success by One Stop in its concept stores to offer a greater variety of impulse and snack products including chilled drinks which are stored in the integral fridge. The mobile counter can be adapted to offer fresh food and snacks and will also house a lottery machine or scratch card dispenser.
• The infinitely flexible Mobile Merchandising Unit gives retailers total merchandising freedom in stores of any size. This lightweight yet strong unit enables retailers to position impulse and seasonal products anywhere in the store.
• The recently launched Mobile Medicine Stand is purpose-built to enable retailers to display OTC medications in an appropriate position in the store.
Adapting to a changing market
Stuart Yates concluded: “The message that came across from the many speakers at the Show, including HIM Research, was that we could be optimistic about the convenience retail sector. From our many conversations, it became clear that retailers are looking to companies like Shelving Solutions, with proven industry expertise, a track record of success and a superb product range, for help in adapting their stores to take full advantage of the opportunities for increased profitability.”
